It serves as the tutorial mission of the game.   Orthopox sends Cryptosporidium-137 out to investigate Earth following the disappearance and failure of Crypto's previous clone, Cryptosporidium-136. Upon landing, Pox tells Crypto to investigate and find the dominant lifeform on Earth, pointing out the nearby cows as possible target. After investigating the thoughts of the cows by scanning their minds , Crypto attempts to convey the cows by telling them that Earth is now part of the Furon Empire and offers one to be tested out.
